Press Release
August 20, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On 17/08/07, the Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Feleti Sevele presented prizes to the winner, ‘Akanesi Kaufusi, of the 38th Pacific Islands Leaders Forum Logo Competition at the International Dateline Hotel, unveiling the logo to be used by Tonga as the host country following a national competition which showcased local talents.
The competition managed by local firm, Professional PR, invited participation from participants of all ages beginning at Primary School level to the more serious and experienced artists both here and abroad. The designs were aimed at denoting the uniqueness of Tonga. Submissions included a variety of attractive logos that particularly captured the essence of being Tongan, with the use of cultural themes that included: the Ha’amonga, the Tongan tapa design, the kalia, islands, the Heilala, the Crown, and the Coat of Arms.
The Prime Minister’s Office judged the competition and announced the top three on Friday 17/08/07. Sixteen year old ‘Akanesi Kaufusi of Pelehake won with an abstract design that can be interpreted as signifying many things Pacific and Tongan. A student of Queen Salote College, Kaufusi not only designs the official logo but also receives $1000 and a phone. Second place was won by Tupou Siuta, an employee of Tonga Print (formerly the Printing Department) since 1982. She won $500. In third place was Walter Halakeituai, a student at the University of the South Pacific, from Fanga ‘o Pilolevu. He won $300. Consolation prizes were given to all participants by Tonfon and TCC. PacTrade sponsored the beverages for the event.
Professional PR would like to congratulate all participants especially the upcoming talents from GPS Houma and GPS Te’ekiu. It was an excellent opportunity to encourage budding artists.
